What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Your Best Life Independent Living is a Supported Independent Living (SIL) provider on the Sunshine Coast, Noosa, Moreton and Gympie regions. SIL refers to the funding provided by the NDIA to pay for supports in and outside of the home for everyday activities. These supports may include assistance with household tasks, personal care, accessing appointments, grocery shopping, going to a restaurant, medical appointments, and being transported to social and community-based activities.

SIL funding also includes support, supervision and/or prompting provided by support workers to enable NDIS participants to develop their daily living skills to be as independent as possible in everyday life.

SIL can be offered in multiple settings such as group homes, rental homes, public housing, participants’ own homes, or in a Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) with staffed 24/7 support in-house.

Who Is Eligible For Supported Independent Living Funding?

NDIS participants who require daily support to live outside the family home, and whose support needs cannot be met through mainstream services alone, may be eligible for SIL funding. Eligibility is assessed by the NDIA and typically requires evidence of support needs, goals related to independent living, and an assessment of the most appropriate and cost-effective support model. A support coordinator can assist with preparing the evidence required for an SIL assessment.

How Do I Get Supported Independent Living In My NDIS Plan?

To get SIL included in an NDIS plan, a participant generally follows these steps: (1) Work with a support coordinator or allied health professional to gather evidence of support needs. (2) Complete a 28-day rostering trial where required to demonstrate support requirements. (3) Submit a SIL quote from a registered provider to the NDIA for approval. (4) The NDIA reviews the request and includes SIL funding in the plan if approved. (5) The participant moves into an approved SIL arrangement with their chosen provider.

Can I Choose My Own SIL Provider?

Yes, NDIS participants have the right to choose their own Supported Independent Living provider. Participants can compare registered SIL providers in their area based on location, vacancy availability, staffing ratios, and compatibility with their goals and lifestyle. Changing SIL providers is also possible, though it involves a transition process coordinated with the NDIA and the incoming provider.

How Is SIL Different From Renting A Private Home?

SIL is a support funding type, not a housing product. A person receiving SIL lives in accommodation which may be rented privately, owned, or provided as Specialist Disability Accommodation and separately receives funded support workers to assist with daily living. The SIL funding pays for the supports, not the rent or mortgage. Participants in SIL arrangements still pay standard rental costs, which may be subsidised through Commonwealth Rent Assistance or SDA funding if applicable.

How Does SIL Work?

To access SIL services, you must have a current NDIS plan that includes Supported Independent Living funding. The amount of NDIS funding will depend on the degree of reasonable and necessary supports the participant needs. The SIL funding will be based on the quote from the SIL provider and any supporting documentation assessment report from an allied health professional.

Eligibility for Supported Independent Living benefits requires proof that you are unable to live without reasonable and necessary 24/7 supports. It is crucial that the supportive environment is beneficial, effective, and customised to the individual’s needs.
