NDIS Social and Community Participation

NDIS Social and Community Participation

NDIS logo

Community Participation is about having fun and taking part in engaging activities in a safe environment. Our job is to help you flourish and feel that you belong.

Leisure, social and recreation activities are some of the most crucial supports covered by your NDIS plan, providing a way to achieve its objective of assisting people with a disability.

Being socially active can help improve a person’s overall well-being in many ways, including breaking down boredom and lessening the sense of isolation. The ultimate goal is to support NDIS participants and help them achieve independence for social, community and economic participation.

Your Best Life Independent Living offer Social and Community Participation services on the Sunshine Coast, Noosa, Gympie and Moreton Bay regions. Contact us at (07) 5293 9020 or get in touch with us online to let us know how we can help you.

Assistance with Social and Community Participation

Social and Community Participation (also referred to as “Community Participation”) is the NDIA’s funding to support people with a disability to take part in their community.

Community Participation activities are funded under the NDIS either through Core or Capacity Building, based on whichever is reasonable and necessary to reach your goals.

These NDIS social and community participation supports assist participants in getting out and about, meeting new people, and trying new experiences such as joining a group activity, accessing art classes, learning new skills, going to gym and much more!

This funding can be used flexibly in a group setting or to access one-on-one support and is focused on achieving goals and social inclusion for the NDIS participant.

Finding Social and Community Participation In Your NDIS Plan

The NDIS has two categories aimed at providing support to help you participate in your community.

Core Supports Budget

Social and Community Participation is a funded support that you may find under Core Supports of your NDIS plan.

This budget pays for the ongoing support you need for community participation. It ensures  your everyday activities and current disability-related needs work towards your goals.

This Community Participation support category covers social and community activities that are either centre-based or out in the community. So, if a participant wants to attend community classes and needs a support worker to go with them, this budget category will be used.

This NDIS funding may be used for Social and Community Participation for supports related to the following social or recreational activities:

  • Attending personal development courses
  • Visiting the local library
  • Joining a social group or sporting club
  • Going to a holiday camp or an outing
  • Watching a movie or attending a concert
  • Taking part in community events
  • Joining a group recreational activity

Capacity Building Supports Budget

The second category is the Capacity Building Supports budget. It’s similar to the Core Supports category, but the activities a participant chooses must contain a skill-building component.

The Capacity Building Supports of your NDIS plan aims to boost independent living skills and help you pursue your goals. These supports may include assistance to establish volunteer arrangements in the community, mentoring, peer support or individual skill development.

Increased Social and Community Participation funding may be found under Capacity Building Supports. This funding category can be used to pay for camps, tuition fees, art classes, sports coaching and vacation activities that enhance life skills and independence.
